DenialofService(DoS)attacksaresomeofthemostcommoncyberthreatsthatorganizationsfacetoday.Theseattacksaredesignedtodisruptnormaloperationsbyfloodingtheirnetworkresources,renderingtheminaccessibletousers.OneeffectivewayofmitigatingtheimpactofDoSattacksisbyusingredundancycontrolsystemsthatcanswitchbetweendifferentcomponentstoensurecontinuousoperation.Inthispaper,weexaminetheuseofaswitchableLuenbergerobserver-basedredundantcontrolsystemtomitigatetheimpactofDoSattacks.
TheLuenbergerobserverisastateobserverthatestimatesthesystem'sstatevariablesbasedonmeasurementstakenfromtheoutputofasystem.Thestateobserverthengeneratesanestimateofthesystem'sinternalstatevariables,whichcanbeusedtodesignafeedbackcontroller.Byusingaredundantcontrolsystem,wecanswitchbetweenmultiplecontrollerstomitigatetheimpactofaDoSattackonthesystem.
InaswitchableLuenbergerobserver-basedredundantcontrolsystem,therearemultiplefeedbackcontrollersthatcanbeswitchedinresponsetocertaintriggers.Forexample,iftheprimarycontrollerfailstorespondduetoaDoSattack,theredundantcontrollercanautomaticallytakeoverbyswitchingthesystem'sfeedbackcontrolloop.TheLuenbergerobserverisusedtoestimatethesystem'sstatevariables,whichcanbeusedtodesignafeedbackcontrollerthatensurescontinuoussystemoperation.
TheswitchableLuenbergerobserver-basedredundantcontrolsystemisdesignedtoworkwithbothlinearandnonlinearsystems.Thesystem'sdynamicsaremodeledusingmathematicalequations,whicharethenlinearizedaroundanoperatingpointtoderivethestate-spaceequations.Thestate-spacemodelisthenusedtodesignafeedbackcontrollerthatensuresstabilityandrobustnessinthepresenceofaDoSattack.
ToevaluatetheperformanceoftheswitchableLuenbergerobserver-basedredundantcontrolsystem,wesimulatedaDoSattackonanetworksystem.Theattackwasdesignedtodisruptthenormaloperationofthesystembyfloodingitwithahighvolumeofrequests.Wethenusedtheobserver-basedredundantcontrolsystemtoswitchbetweenmultiplecontrollerstomitigatetheimpactoftheattackonthesystem.
Ourresultsshowed
