Introduction:
Bisulfiteisanimportantsubstancethatiswidelyusedinvariousfieldssuchasfoodpreservation,pharmaceuticalindustry,anddisinfection.However,excessiveintakeofbisulfitecanleadtoserioushealthproblems,suchasrespiratorydiseasesandskinirritation.Therefore,thedevelopmentofahighlysensitiveandspecificmethodfordetectingbisulfiteisurgentlyneeded.Fluorescenceprobeshaveattractedmuchattentioninrecentyearsduetotheiradvantagesofhighsensitivity,simplicity,andlowcost.Herein,wereportonthedevelopmentofanovelfluorescence-enhancedprobebasedonbenzoimidazoleforthedetectionofbisulfiteanditspracticalapplication.
Experimental:
Firstly,thebenzoimidazole-basedprobewassynthesizedthroughasimpleone-stepreactionbetween4-(benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)benzaldehydeand3-aminophenol.Thefluorescencepropertiesoftheprobeanditsinteractionwithbisulfitewerestudiedusingfluorescencespectroscopy.Theresultsshowedthatthefluorescenceoftheprobewassignificantlyenhancedupontheadditionofbisulfiteduetotheformationofabisulfite-inducedring-openingreaction.
Theselectivityoftheprobeforbisulfitewasalsoinvestigatedbyaddingvariousinterferingsubstancessuchasmetalions,anions,andaminoacids.Theresultsindicatedthattheprobeexhibitedhighselectivityforbisulfitewithoutinterferencefromothersubstances.
Toevaluatethepracticalapplicationoftheprobe,wetesteditsperformanceindetectingbisulfiteinrealsamplessuchaswineandjuice.Theresultsshowedthattheprobecouldefficientlydetectbisulfiteinthesesamples,indicatingitspracticalusefulness.
Discussion:
Thebenzoimidazole-basedfluorescence-enhancedprobewedevelopedisahighlysensitiveandselectivemethodfordetectingbisulfite.Theprobeissimpletosynthesizeandeasytooperate,makingitapromisingcandidateforpracticalapplicationindetectingbisulfiteinvariousfields.Thebisulfite-inducedring-openingreactionoftheprobeprovidesauniqueandsensitivesignaltransductionmechanismthatenablestheprobetose
