Introduction: Fixed-fieldintensity-modulatedradiationtherapy(IMRT)hasgainedpopularityinrecentyearsduetoitsabilitytopreciselyshapetheradiationdosedistributioninthetargetarea.AngleoptimizationplaysacrucialroleinthesuccessofIMRT,asitdeterminesthearrangementoftreatmentbeamsaroundthepatient.Theobjectiveofangleoptimizationistofindtheoptimalsetofanglesthatmaximizesthedosetothetumorwhileminimizingthedosetocriticalstructures.Conventionaloptimizationtechniques,suchaslinearprogrammingandsimulatedannealing,havebeenusedforangleoptimization,buttheyoftensufferfromlimitationsintermsofcomputationalefficiencyandsuboptimalsolutions.Hence,theneedforanewapproach. Methods: Theproposedstandardsecond-orderprogramming(SSOP)approachcombinestheadvantagesofconvexoptimizationandsecond-orderconeprogrammingtosolvetheangleoptimizationprobleminfixed-fieldIMRT.IntheSSOPformulation,theobjectivefunctionistomaximizetheradiationdosetothetumortarget,whiletheconstraintsensurethatthedosestocriticalstructuresarekeptbelowcertainpredefinedthresholds.TheSSOPapproachallowsfortheinclusionofadditionalconstraints,suchasdose-volumehistogramconstraints,tofurthercustomizetheoptimizationprocess.
