Introduction
NamedDataNetworking(NDN)isaproposedfutureInternetarchitecturethatemployscontent-basednaminginsteadofend-to-endaddressing.ItisexpectedtooffersignificantadvantagesoverthecurrentInternet,suchasnativesupportforcaching,multicast,andmobility.However,realizingNDNrequiresdesigningefficientroutingandforwardingmechanisms.SoftwareDefinedNetworking(SDN)isapromisingframeworkforbuildingsuchmechanisms,asitdecouplescontrolanddataplanes,enablingdynamicandflexiblenetworkprogrammability.ThispaperproposesanSDN-basedNDNroutingandforwardingmechanismthatleveragesthebenefitsofbothNDNandSDN.
Background
NDNisacontent-centricnetworkarchitecturethatemphasizescontentasthefundamentalunitofcommunicationandnameseverythinginthenetwork,includingdatapackets,routers,andapplications,usingcontentnames.NDNroutersmaintaincontentstoresthatcacherecentlyrequesteddataforfutureuseandforwardrequeststosatisfyfuturerequests.ThiscachingreducestheloadonupstreamroutersandmakesNDNhighlysuitableforcontentdistributionandmultimediaapplications.
InNDN,arequestforacontentitemissatisfiedbyreturningalltheavailabledatachunks,alongwithmetadatathatcontainsnamesandotherinformationaboutthechunks.Thereceiverusesthismetadatatoreassemblethecontentitem.NDNusesahop-by-hopforwardingmechanism,whereeachhopforwardtheinterestpackettowardstheoriginofthecontent,oracachethatcontainstherequestedcontent.However,efficientroutingandforwardingofInterestpacketsisasignificantchallengeinNDN,especiallyinlargeanddynamicnetworks.
SDNisanetworkarchitecturethatseparatesnetworkcontrolanddataplanes.Thecontrolplaneconsistsofoneormorecontrollersthatdefineandenforcenetworkpolicies,whilethedataplaneconsistsofforwardingdevicessuchasswitchesandroutersthatexecutethesepolicies.Thecontrollerscommunicatewiththeforwardingdevicesusingawell-definedprotocolsuchasOpenFlow.Thisdecouplingofcontrolanddataplanesenablesnetworkprogrammabilityandsimplifiesthemanagementoflargeandcomplexnetw
