Introduction:
Themarinetransportationindustryisoneofthebiggestcontributorstoairpollutionandclimatechange.Thecombustionoffossilfuelssuchasdieselbymarinedieselenginesproducesharmfulemissions,includingsulphuroxides(SOx)thathavesignificantimpactsonhumanhealth,theenvironment,andtheeconomy.Therefore,inrecentyears,effortshavebeenmadetoreducetheharmfulimpactsofmarinevesselsontheenvironmentbyoptimizingtheperformanceofmarinedieselengines.ThispaperaimstoexplorewaystooptimizetheperformanceofmarinedieselenginestoreduceSOxemissions.
Background:
Thevastmajorityofmarinevesselsrelyondieselengines.Astheseenginesconsumevastamountsoffuelduringoperation,theyemithighvolumesofharmfulairpollutants,includingSOx.TheemissionofSOxfromdieselenginesisamajorconcernduetoitsimpactonhumanhealthandtheenvironment.SOxformsacidrain,whichcausesdamagetobuildings,vegetation,andaquaticecosystems.Besides,SOxcontributestoatmosphericpollution,resultinginreducedvisibilityandrespiratoryproblems,particularlyforsensitiveindividualssuchaschildrenandpeoplewithchronicrespiratoryproblems.
SourcesofSOxEmissions:
SOxemissionsaremainlyformedwhenthesulphurpresentindieselfuelisburnedduringcombustion.Thisoccursbecausedieselfuelcontainsmoresulphurthangasolineorotherfuels.TheamountofSOxemissiondependsonthetypeoffuel,engineload,andoperatingconditionsoftheengine.Inaddition,olderdieselenginesemitmoreSOxthannewermodelsastheylackadvancedemissioncontroltechnology.
OptimizingthePerformanceofMarineDieselEngines:
ToreduceSOxemissionsfrommarinedieselengines,severalstrategiescanbeused.Theseinclude:
