TheOpticalDrivenTwo-DimensionalHomogeneousp-nJunctionanditsApplicationinOptoelectronicInterconnectCircuits
Inrecentyears,two-dimensional(2D)materialshaveattractedwidespreadattentionduetotheiruniqueelectronicandopticalproperties.Amongthese2Dmaterials,grapheneandtransitionmetaldichalcogenides(TMDs)havebeenextensivelystudiedduetotheirexcellentperformanceinoptoelectronics.Inthispaper,wefocusontheopticaldrivenhomogenousp-njunctionbasedonTMDsanditspotentialapplicationsinoptoelectronicinterconnectcircuits.
Ahomogeneousp-njunctioncanbeachievedbyselectivelydopingdifferentregionsofaTMDflake,effectivelycreatingaheterojunction.Thep-typeandn-typeregionsaredopedseparately,resultinginamechanicallystable2Dhomogeneousp-njunction.Thedopingcanbeachievedbyseveralmethodssuchaschemicaldoping,electrostaticdoping,orionimplantation.Theresultingp-njunctionhasseveraluniquefeatures,includinggate-tunabledirectandindirectbandgapsandhighlyefficientchargeseparation,whichcanbeexploitedinoptoelectronicdevices.
Oneofthekeyapplicationsofthehomogenousp-njunctionisinoptoelectronicinterconnectcircuits.Electricalinterconnectsarevitalcomponentsinmodernmicroelectroniccircuits,buttheysufferfromvariousdrawbacks,includinglimitedbandwidth,signalloss,andinterference.Optoelectronicinterconnects,ontheotherhand,offerapotentialsolutiontotheselimitationssincetheyuselightinsteadofelectricalsignalsforcommunication.However,theintegrationofopticalinterconnectswithconventionalelectroniccircuitsremainsachallenge.
Thehomogenousp-njunctioncanbeusedtoovercomesomeoftheseintegrationchallenges.Thehighchargeseparationefficiencyofthep-njunctionallowsforthegenerationofalargephotocurrent,whichcanbeusedtomodulatetheconductivityofthedeviceandhencemodulatetheintensityoflight.Thisprocessisknownasthephotovoltaiceffect.Thephotovoltaiceffectcanbeutilizedtoefficientlyconvertopticalsignalsintoelectricalsignalsandviceversa,enablingtherealizationofoptoelectronicinterconnectcircuits.
Thehomogenousp-njunctioncanals
