Abstract
TheefficientandreliabledesignofasynchronousbuckconverterbasedontheLTC3879ispresentedinthispaper.ThedesignandimplementationoftheconverteraredoneusingtheSPICEsoftwaretosimulatetheperformanceofthecircuitunderdifferentoperationalconditions.Theresultsshowthattheconvertermeetsthedesiredspecificationswithanefficiencyofupto95%andoutputvoltageregulationwithin1%.
Introduction
Synchronousbuckconvertersarewidelyusedinvariousapplicationsthatrequirehighlyefficientvoltageregulation.TheLTC3879high-performancesynchronousbuckconverterisidealfortheseapplicationsduetoitshighefficiencyandabilitytohandlehighcurrentloads.Thedesignoftheconverterinvolvestheselectionoftheappropriatecomponentsandtopologytoachievethedesiredperformance.
Design
Thedesignofthesynchronousbuckconverterisbasedonthefollowingspecifications:
-Inputvoltage:20V
-Outputvoltage:5V
-Outputvoltageripple:<100mV
-Outputcurrent:5A
TheLTC3879isahigh-performancebuckconvertercontrollerthatoperatesatafixedfrequencyof550kHz.Thecontrollerhasawideinputvoltagerangeof4.5Vto38V,makingitsuitableforawiderangeofapplications.ThecontrollerisdesignedtooperateinasynchronousbucktopologyusingapairofN-channelMOSFETsforhighefficiency.
Theselectionoftheinductorandoutputcapacitoriscriticaltotheperformanceoftheconverter.TheinductorshouldhaveahighsaturationcurrentandalowDCresistancetominimizepowerloss.Theoutputcapacitorshouldhavealowequivalentseriesresistance(ESR)andalsobeabletohandlehighripplecurrent.
A22uHinductorwithasaturationcurrentof9AandaDCresistanceof8.3mohmisselectedforthedesign.A47uFaluminumelectrolyticcapacitorwithanESRof40mohmisusedfortheoutputcapacitor.
Simulation
ThedesignissimulatedusingtheSPICEsoftwaretoverifytheperformanceofthecircuitunderdifferentoperationalconditions.Thesimulationresultsshowthattheconvertermeetsthedesiredspecificationswithanefficiencyofupto95%andoutputvoltageregulationwithin1%.Theoutputvoltagerippleisalsowithinthedesiredrangeof<100mV.
