Introduction
Visiblelightcommunication(VLC)isapromisingtechnologythatcanprovidehigh-speeddatatransmissionandsecurecommunication.However,thetransmissionperformanceofVLCisgreatlyaffectedbyvariousuncontrollablefactors,suchasambientlightinterferenceandshadowingeffects.Toovercometheseproblems,variouscodingschemeshavebeenproposed.Inthispaper,wewillintroduceanewcodingschemebasedonrun-length-lengthcontrolconstraintsinVLC.
Background
InVLC,themodulationofthelightsourceisusedtocarryinformation,andcodingschemesareusedtofurtherimprovethetransmissionperformance.Variouscodingschemeshavebeenproposed,suchaspulsepositionmodulation(PPM),on-offkeying(OOK),andfrequencyshiftkeying(FSK).However,thesecodingschemeshavelimitationsindealingwithambientlightinterferenceandshadowingeffects.Afewcodingschemesbasedonrun-lengthencodinghavebeenproposedtoimprovetheperformanceofVLC.
Run-LengthControlConstraints
Run-lengthencodingisadatacompressiontechniquethatrepresentsrepeatingdatasymbolsequencesasasingledatavalueandcount.Weproposeanewcodingschemebasedonrun-lengthcontrolconstraintstoimprovetheperformanceofVLC.Thisschemeusestherun-lengthofthelightsourcemodulationsignaltocontroltheencodingofthedatasequence.Specifically,run-lengthcontrolconstraintsareimplementedasfollows:
1.Atthebeginningofthedatasequence,thefirstfewdatasymbolsareencodedusingafixedrun-lengthvaluetoindicatethetypeofencodingusedinthefollowingdatasequence.Forexample,ifthedatasequenceisencodedusingManchesterencoding,thefirstfewdatasymbolsareencodedusingafixedrun-lengthvalueof1.
2.Aftertheinitialencoding,therun-lengthofthelightsourcemodulationsignalisusedtodeterminetheencodingofthedatasequence.Iftherun-lengthiswithinacertainrange,thedatasymbolisencodedusingoneencodingscheme,whileiftherun-lengthisoutsidetherange,thedatasymbolisencodedusinganotherencodingscheme.Forexample,iftherun-lengthisbetween2and4,thedatasymbolisencodedusingManchesterencoding;otherwise,itisencodedusingdifferentialpulse-codedmodulation(DPCM).
