Abstract
Inrecentyears,thefieldofbiometricshasseensignificantadvances,withthedevelopmentofnewtechniquesforcollectingandprocessingthree-dimensionalfingerprintimages.Onesuchapproachinvolvestheuseofstructuredlighttechnologytocapturethethree-dimensionalfeaturesoffingerprints,whichcanultimatelybeusedtoenhancetheaccuracyandreliabilityoffingerprintmatchingsystems.Thispaperdescribesanon-contactthree-dimensionalfingerprintacquisitionandprocessingmethodbasedonstructuredlighttechnology.Theproposedmethodisdesignedtoprovideimprovedaccuracyandreliabilityinfingerprintrecognition,andhasthepotentialtorevolutionizethewayinwhichweapproachbiometricsecurityinarangeofdifferentapplications.
Introduction
Fingerprintrecognitionisoneofthemostwidelyusedbiometrictechnologiesintheworldtoday,andhasapplicationsacrossawiderangeoffields,includinglawenforcement,bordercontrol,finance,andhealthcare.Oneofthekeychallengesinfingerprintrecognitionistheneedtoensurethattheimagesbeingcollectedarebothaccurateandreliable.Inmanycases,traditionaltwo-dimensionalfingerprintimagescanbedifficulttointerpret,andmaybesusceptibletoerrorscausedbydifferentlightingconditionsorvariationsintheorientationorpressureofthefingerbeingscanned.Asaresult,therehasbeenincreasinginterestinthedevelopmentofnew,three-dimensionalfingerprintacquisitionandprocessingtechniques,whicharemoreaccurateandreliablethantheirtwo-dimensionalcounterparts.
Structuredlighttechnologyisoneofthemostpromisingapproachesforthree-dimensionalfingerprintacquisitionandprocessing.Thistechnologyinvolvestheprojectionofapatternoflightontothesurfaceofanobject,whichisthencapturedusingacameraorotherimagingdevice.Byanalyzingthedistortionofthispattern,itispossibletocalculatethethree-dimensionalshapeoftheobjectbeingimaged.
