Abstract:
Fuelcellshavegainedsignificantinterestasacleanandefficientenergyconversiontechnology.Theperformanceanddurabilityoffuelcellsheavilyrelyonthebehaviorandconcentrationofhydrogenperoxide(H2O2)inthecatalystlayer.AccuratecharacterizationofH2O2concentrationiscrucialforunderstandingthereactionmechanismandoptimizingthedesignoffuelcellsystems.ThispaperaimstoreviewanddiscussvariousmethodsforcharacterizingH2O2concentrationinfuelcellcatalystlayers.
1.Introduction:
Fuelcellsareelectrochemicaldevicesthatconvertthechemicalenergyofafuel,typicallyhydrogen,intoelectricalenergy.Themostcommontypesoffuelcellsemployapolymerelectrolytemembrane(PEM)wherehydrogenandoxygenreacttoproducewaterandelectricity.Inthesecells,thecatalystlayerplaysacrucialroleinfacilitatingtheoxygenreductionreaction(ORR)andhydrogenoxidationreaction(HOR).H2O2,abyproductoftheORR,isknowntohaveastronginfluenceontheperformanceanddurabilityoffuelcells.
2.CurrentUnderstandingofH2O2inFuelCells:
H2O2isformedduringtheoxygenreductionreactionduetotheslowreductionofoxygenatthecathode.Itsconcentrationinthecatalystlayerisdependentonvariousfactors,includingoperatingconditions,catalystproperties,andcatalystlayerstructure.HighconcentrationsofH2O2candegradethecatalystperformance,causemembranedegradation,andleadtoreducedcellvoltageoutput.Therefore,accuratemeasurementandcharacterizationofH2O2concentrationareimportantforfuelcellresearchanddevelopment.
3.CharacterizationMethods:
3.1Electrochemicaltechniques:
-CyclicVoltammetry(CV):ThistechniqueprovidesinformationabouttheelectrochemicalbehaviorandkineticsofH2O2inthecatalystlayer.Bymeasuringcurrent-voltagecurves,theconcentrationofH2O2canbeestimatedbasedontheFaraday'slaw.
-RotatingRingDiskElectrode(RRDE):ThismethodallowsforthemeasurementoftheORRandHORseparately,providinginsightsintotheH2O2productionandconsumptionrates.
