Abstract:
Copper(Cu)isanessentialmicronutrientfororganisms,butexcessiveaccumulationofCucanhavedetrimentaleffectsonbothhumanhealthandtheenvironment.Redswampcrayfish(Procambarusclarkii),alsoknownastheLouisianacrawfishorcrayfish,isacommerciallyimportantcrustaceanspeciesthathasgainedpopularityworldwide.Thispaperaimstoexplorethecurrentstatusofcopperenrichmentinredswampcrayfishandanalyzetheenvironmentalsourcescontributingtothisenrichment.
Introduction:
Copperisanaturallyoccurringheavymetalthatexistsinvariousformsintheenvironment.Humanactivities,suchasindustrialoperations,agriculturalpractices,anddomesticwastewaterdischarge,haveledtothereleaseofsignificantamountsofcopperintoaquaticecosystems.Crustaceans,includingredswampcrayfish,areparticularlysusceptibletoaccumulatingcopperduetotheirexposuretocontaminatedwaterandsediments.
Methods:
Toinvestigatethecopperenrichmentstatusinredswampcrayfish,acomprehensiveliteraturereviewwasconducted.Studiesfocusingoncopperconcentrationsindifferenttissues(e.g.,hepatopancreas,gills,muscle)ofredswampcrayfishwereanalyzed.Moreover,environmentalsourcescontributingtocopperaccumulationinredswampcrayfishwerealsoassessedbyreviewingstudiesoncoppercontaminationinwater,sediments,andfoodsourcesoftheseorganisms.
Results:
Theliteraturereviewrevealedthatredswampcrayfishexhibitedsignificantcopperenrichmentinvarioustissues.Thehepatopancreas,beingavitalorganresponsibleformetalmetabolism,showedthehighestcopperconcentrations.Copperlevelsincrayfishmusclewerefoundtoberelativelylower,makingitasafertissueforhumanconsumption.However,itisimportanttonotethatcoppercanbioaccumulateincrayfishmuscleovertime,posingpotentialriskstohumanhealthifconsumedinexcessiveamountsoroveranextendedperiod.
Theanalysisofenvironmentalsourcesindicatedthatbothnaturalprocessesandanthropogenicactivitiescontributetocoppercontaminationinthehabitatsofredswampcrayfish.Naturals
