TheImpactofWheatPriceFluctuationsonFarmers'WillingnesstoParticipateinFallowLand:AStudy
Introduction:
Amongthevariousagriculturalproductsworldwide,wheatisconsideredtobeoneofthemostimportantandwidelyproducedcrops,playingavitalroleintheglobalfoodsecurity.InChina,wheatisamajoragriculturalcommodityandisgrownextensivelybyfarmersacrossthecountry.However,thepriceofwheatfluctuatesregularly,whichcanposeaseriousconcernforbothfarmersandtheeconomy.Forthefarmers,thepricevolatilitycansignificantlyaffecttheirwillingnesstoparticipateinthefallowlandprogram.Fallowlandistheun-utilizedlandbythefarmers,irrespectiveofthereason,whichwhenputintherightusecanhelpincroprotationandsoilrestoration,leadingtohigheryieldsandagriculturalsustainability.Thisstudyaimstoidentifyhowthepricefluctuationsofwheatcaninfluencefarmers'willingnesstoparticipateinthefallowlandprogram.
LiteratureReview:
Studieshaveshownthatpricefluctuationsofagriculturalcommoditiesplayacrucialroleinfarmers'decision-makingregardingtheirparticipationinfallowlandprograms.ResearchbyBaiandZhang(2018)showedthatfarmersweremorelikelytoparticipateinfallowlandprogramswhenthepriceofwheatwashigh,whiletheoppositewastruewhenthepriceofwheatwaslow.Similarly,studiesbyXueetal.(2018)andXiaetal.(2019)elucidatedthatfarmers'willingnesstoparticipateinfallowlandprogramswasmorepositivelycorrelatedwiththepriceofwheat.Therefore,theliteraturesuggeststhatthepriceofwheatcanbeacrucialdeterminantoffarmers'willingnesstoparticipateinfallowlandprograms.
Methodology:
Thestudyusedaqualitativeresearchdesign,employingsemi-structuredinterviewstocollectdatafrom50randomlyselectedwheatfarmersinChina.Thequestionnairedesignedforthesurveycomprisedofthreemajorsections,thefirstsectionwasaboutthebasicinformationoffarmers,thesecondsectionwasaboutquestionsrelatedtofarmers'participationinthefallowlandprogram,andthethirdsectiondealtdirectlywiththepricefluctuationsofwheat.Eachinterviewlastedforabout15-20minutes,anddatawereanalyzedthroughcontentanalysis.
