Thedemandforhigh-speedcommunicationisconstantlyincreasinginmoderntimes.Withtheincreaseindemand,theneedforhigh-speedopticalcommunicationnetworksisalsoincreasing.The10Gbit/sopticalcommunicationnetworkisonesuchhigh-speednetwork,whichisbeingusedinvariousapplicationsfordatatransmission.Inthis10Gbit/sopticalcommunicationnetwork,thesignalqualityisacriticalfactorthataffectstheoverallnetworkperformance.ThesignalqualitycanbeimprovedbyusingAdaptiveEqualizationtechniques.Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthedesignofanAdaptiveEqualizer,whichcanbeappliedin10Gbit/sopticalcommunicationnetworksandbackplanetransmissions.
Background
AdaptiveEqualizationisatechniqueusedtoimprovethesignalqualityofthedatatransmittedthroughacommunicationchannel.Thistechniqueisparticularlyusefulinhigh-speedcommunicationsystemswherethesignalqualityisaffectedbythechannelfrequencyresponse.TheAdaptiveEqualizercompensatesforthedistortioncausedbythechannelfrequencyresponseandimprovesthesignalqualitytoasignificantextent.
Thechannelfrequencyresponseisgenerallyaffectedduetotheattenuationofthehigh-frequencycomponentsofthesignal,whichresultsinanoverallreductioninthesignalquality.TheAdaptiveEqualizercountersthisattenuationbyusingadigitalfilterandanadaptivealgorithmtoestimateandcompensateforthechannelfrequencyresponse.
DesignofAdaptiveEqualizer
ThedesignoftheAdaptiveEqualizerinvolvesthefollowingstages:
1.ChannelEstimation:Inthisstage,thefrequencyresponseofthechannelisestimatedbyusingatrainingsequence.Theestimatedfrequencyresponseisthenusedasareferencefortheequalizationprocess.
2.Equalization:Inthisstage,thedigitalfilterisusedtocompensateforthedistortioncausedbythechannel.Theequalizationprocessisdesignedtominimizetheerrorbetweenthereceivedsignalandthereferencesignal.
3.Adaptation:Inthisstage,theadaptivealgorithmisusedtoupdatethefiltercoefficientsbasedontheerrorbetweenthereceivedsignalandthereferencesignal.Theupdateprocessissuchthatthefiltercoefficientsareadjustedtominimizetheerrorbetweent
