Introduction
Marinecarriersplayacriticalroleintransportingpeopleandgoodsacrosstheglobe.However,theyalsocontributesignificantlytoenvironmentalpollutionthroughtheirrelianceonfossilfuels.Tomitigatethisnegativeimpact,theuseoffuelcelltechnologyasacleanenergysourceinmarinepropulsionhasgainedattentioninrecentyears.Fuelcellsprovidehighefficiencyandzero-emissionenergyproduction,makingthemanattractiveoptionformarinecarriers.However,tointegratefuelcellsintomarinecarriersystems,appropriatepowerconditioningequipmentsuchasDC-DCboostconvertersisnecessary.ThispaperpresentsadesignandcontrolstudyofaDC-DCboostconverterforfuelcell-poweredmarinecarriers.
DC-DCBoostConverterDesign
TheDC-DCboostconverterisacrucialcomponentforfuelcell-poweredmarinecarriersasitprovidesthenecessaryboostvoltageforthepropulsionsystem.Aboostconverteroperatesbystoringenergyinaninductorduringthe“on”periodofaswitchandreleasingtheenergyduringthe“off”period.Thiscreatesahigh-voltageoutputfromalowervoltageinput.Thedesignoftheboostconverterwilldependonthespecificrequirementsofthefuelcellpropulsionsystem.
ThekeydesignparametersforaDC-DCboostconverterincludetheinputvoltage,outputvoltage,maximumloadcurrent,switchingfrequency,andefficiency.Theinputvoltagewilldependonthecharacteristicsofthefuelcellstack,withatypicalrangeof50-400VDC.Theoutputvoltagewillbedependentontherequirementsofthepropulsionsystemandmaynecessitateavoltagestep-upofseveralhundredvolts.Themaximumloadcurrentwilldependonthepowerratingofthepropulsionsystem.Theswitchingfrequencywillalsobedependentonthespecificsystemrequirementsandistypicallyintherangeof50-100kHz.Finally,converterefficiencyiscriticaltoreducingpowerlossandimprovingoverallsystemefficiency.
