StudyontheToxicityofFormaldehydeonDifferentDevelopmentStagesofChineseMittenCrab
Introduction
TheChinesemittencrab(Eriocheirsinensis)isapopularspeciesoffreshwatercrustaceancommonlyconsumedinChina.However,therapidincreaseofindustrializationandurbanizationhasledtotheexcessiveuseofharmfulchemicals,especiallyformaldehyde,inthecrabfarmingindustry,causingseriousharmtotheecologicalenvironmentandsafetyofitsproduction.Therefore,itisessentialtostudythetoxicityofformaldehydeondifferentdevelopmentalstagesoftheChinesemittencrabfortheevaluationofitspotentialhazards.
Methodology
Inthisstudy,weculturedChinesemittencrablarvaefromegghatchingtothejuvenilestageandexposedthemtodifferentconcentrationsofformaldehydefor24hours.Wethenobservedthesurvivalrateandmorphologicalchangesofthecrablarvaeatdifferentstages,includingzoea,megalopa,andjuvenilestages.
Results
OurresultsshowedthatformaldehydehadsignificanttoxicityonthesurvivalrateandmorphologyofChinesemittencrablarvae.Themortalityrateofzoealarvaewassignificantlyhigherthanthatofmegalopaandjuvenilestageswhenexposedtoformaldehydeconcentrationsof4,6,and8mg/L.Thehighestmortalityrateofzoeawasobservedattheconcentrationof8mg/L,whichwas100%.Themegalopalarvaealsoshowedasignificantdecreaseinsurvivalrate,withthehighestmortalityrateattheconcentrationof8mg/L,whichwas46.67%.Thejuvenilestage,however,exhibitedarelativelyhighertolerancetoformaldehydewithamortalityrateoflessthan20%atconcentrationslessthan12mg/L.
Ourmorphologicalobservationalsoshowedthatformaldehydeexposurecausedsignificantmalformationsinthecrablarvae.Thezoealarvaehadmoreseveredeformitiescomparedtomegalopaandjuvenilestages.Themostcommondeformitiesinthezoealarvaewereincompleteormalformedappendages,lackofpigmentation,andabnormallytwistedcephalothorax.Themegalopalarvaeshowedlessseveremalformations,withincompleteappendagesbeingthemostcommon.Thejuvenilestagehadtheleastdeformities,withonlyafewindividualsshowingincompleteormisshapenappendages.
