Abstract
Waterqualityhasalwaysbeenanessentialissueforoursocietythatdirectlyaffectshumanhealth.Algalbloomsareoneofthemostsignificantwaterqualityissuesthathavebeenaffectingthenaturalaquaticenvironmentworldwide.Monitoringthegrowthofalgaeinwaterbodiesisessentialtomaintainahealthyenvironment.Oneofthemostcommonwaystomonitoralgaeisbymeasuringtherelativegreennessofwaterbodies.TheRelativeGreennessIndex(RGI)isanessentialtoolforquantifyingtheamountofalgaeinwaterbodies.ThispaperpresentsthemethodologytocalculatetheRelativeGreennessIndex(RGI)basedonTime-seriesModerateResolutionImagingSpectroradiometer(MODIS)satelliteimagery.ThepaperalsodescribestheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofRGI,thesignificanceofmonitoringalgalgrowth,andoffersconcludingremarks.
Introduction
Algalbloomsareoneofthemajorwaterqualityissuesthataffectwaterbodiesworldwide.Theyarecausedbytheovergrowthofalgaeandcyanobacteriainwater.Theseorganismsgrowrapidlywhenwaterhasanexcessofnutrients,sunlight,andwarmtemperatures.Whenalgalbloomsoccur,theycancauseseveralproblems,includingdiscolorationofwater,foulodor,tasteproblems,andevendeathofaquaticlife.Algalbloomscanalsoleadtothecreationofharmfultoxinsthatcanharmhumanhealth.Assuch,monitoringthegrowthofalgaeinwaterbodiesisessentialtomaintainahealthyenvironment.
RelativeGreennessIndex(RGI)isatoolcommonlyusedtomeasuretheamountofalgaeinwaterbodies.TheRGIusesremotesensingdatatoestimatetheamountofchlorophyllinwaterbodiesthatisassociatedwithalgalgrowth.AhigherRGIvalueindicatesmorealgaeinawaterbody,whilealowerRGIvalueindicateslessalgae.RGIcanbecalculatedusingsatellitedataorfieldmeasurements.
Methodology
ThemethodologyforcalculatingtheRelativeGreennessIndexbasedonTime-seriesModerateResolutionImagingSpectroradiometer(MODIS)satelliteimageryispresentedbelow.TheMODISsatelliteprovidesdataonreflectedradiationfromtheEarth'ssurface,whichcanbeusedtocalculatetheRGI.
