[Abstract]
Acetatestarch(AS)isawidelyusedbiodegradablematerialduetoitsexcellentfilm-formingabilityandmechanicalproperties.Inthisstudy,acetatestarch-polyvinylalcohol(PVA)blendedfilmswerepreparedwithvaryingratiosofASandPVA.TheaimofthisresearchwastoinvestigatethepropertiesoftheAS-PVAblendedfilms,includingtheirmechanicalstrength,waterresistance,thermalstability,andbiodegradability.TheresultsshowedthattheadditionofPVAimprovedthemechanicalstrengthandwaterresistanceofthefilms.Moreover,thefilmsexhibitedgoodthermalstabilityandbiodegradability,makingthemattractiveforvariouspackagingandbiomedicalapplications.
[Introduction]
Thegrowingconcernoverenvironmentalpollutioncausedbynon-biodegradableplasticshasledtoanincreasingdemandforbiodegradablematerials.Amongthem,starch-basedmaterialshaveattractedsignificantattentionduetotheirabundantavailability,lowcost,andbiocompatibility.However,purestarchfilmsoftensufferfrompoormechanicalpropertiesandwaterresistance,limitingtheirpracticalapplications.Toovercometheselimitations,blendingwithotherpolymersisaneffectiveapproach.Polyvinylalcohol(PVA)isawater-solublesyntheticpolymerknownforitsexcellentfilm-formingabilityandbiodegradability.Inthisstudy,thefocusisontheblendingofacetatestarch(AS)andPVAtoimprovetheoverallpropertiesoftheresultingfilms.
[ExperimentalMethods]
1.MaterialPreparation:ASwaspreparedbytreatingnativestarchwithaceticanhydrideundercontrolledconditions.PVAwasobtainedcommerciallywithamolecularweightof98,000g/mol.
2.FilmPreparation:AS-PVAblendedfilmswerepreparedbymixingASandPVAsolutionsinvaryingratios(e.g.,100:0,80:20,60:40,40:60,20:80,and0:100).Themixturewascastontoaglassplateanddriedatroomtemperaturefor24hours.
3.Characterization:Themechanicalpropertiesofthefilms,includingtensilestrengthandelongationatbreak,weremeasuredusingauniversaltestingmachine.Waterresistancewasevaluatedbyimmersingthefilmsinwaterforaspecifiedtimeandmeasuringthewaterabsorptionrate.Thermal
