Plasticsarewidelyusedinfoodpackagingduetotheirversatility,lowcost,andconvenience.However,thereisgrowingconcernoverthepotentialmigrationofharmfulsubstancesfromtheseplasticmaterialsintothefoodtheycomeintocontactwith.Onesuchsubstanceofconcernismelamine,acompoundthathasbeenassociatedwithvarioushealthrisks.Therefore,itiscrucialtodevelopreliabledetectionmethodstoensurethesafetyandqualityoffoodproducts.Thispaperaimstoreviewanddiscussthevariousmethodsavailableforthedetectionofmelamineinfoodcontactplastics.
AnalyticalTechniquesforMelamineDetection:
1.High-performanceliquidchromatography(HPLC):HPLCisawidelyusedtechniqueformelaminedetectionduetoitshighsensitivityandaccuracy.Itinvolvestheseparationofmelaminefromothercomponentsinthesampleusingasolidphasecolumn,followedbydetectionusingUVormassspectrometry.HPLChasbeensuccessfullyappliedtodetectmelamineinvariousplasticmaterials,includingpackagingfilms,containers,andutensils.
