Abstract:
Selenium(Se)isanessentialtraceelementforhumanhealth,playingacrucialroleinvariousphysiologicalprocesses.Itexistsindifferentchemicalforms,knownasseleniumspeciation,whichexhibitdifferentbiologicalactivitiesandtoxicity.Therefore,accurateandprecisedeterminationofseleniumspeciationinbiologicalsamples,suchashumanserum,isofgreatimportanceforunderstandingitsroleinhumanhealthanddisease.Inthisstudy,weproposetoanalyzeseleniumspeciationinhumanserumusinghigh-performanceliquidchromatography-inductivelycoupledplasmamassspectrometry(HPLC-ICP-MS),apowerfultechniquethatcombinestheseparationcapabilitiesofHPLCwiththeelementaldetectioncapabilitiesofICP-MS.
1.Introduction:
1.1Background:
Seleniumisanessentialmicronutrientforhumanhealth,involvedincrucialredoxreactionsandfunctioningasacofactorforselenoproteins.However,inadequateorexcessiveseleniumintakecanleadtoadversehealtheffects.Thebiologicalactivitiesandtoxicityofseleniumarehighlydependentonitschemicalform,commonlyreferredtoasseleniumspeciation.
1.2SignificanceofSeleniumSpeciationAnalysis:
Accuratedeterminationofseleniumspeciationinbiologicalsamplesiscrucialforunderstandingtheroleofseleniuminhumanhealthanddisease.Variousseleniumspecies,suchasselenocysteine(SeCys),selenomethionine(SeMet),selenite(SeO3^2-),andselenate(SeO4^2-),exhibitdifferentbiologicalactivitiesandtoxicity.Hence,speciationanalysisprovidesinsightsintothebioavailability,metabolism,andpotentialtoxiceffectsofseleniumcompounds.
2.ExperimentalMethods:

Humanserumsampleswerecollectedfromhealthyvolunteersandstoredunderappropriateconditionstomaintainsampleintegrity.Beforeanalysis,thesampleswerethawedandproperlymixedtoensurehomogeneity.
