Abstract
Theslidingbehaviorofarapidlydissolvingthinfilmcoatingsystemisanimportantfactorindeterminingitseffectivenessindeliveringdrugsandotheractiveingredients.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheslidingpropertiesofsuchasystemusingvariousanalyticaltechniques.Theresultssuggestthatthesystemexhibitstailorableslidingbehavior,whichcanbemodulatedbycontrollingcoatingthickness,formulationproperties,andsurfaceroughness.Thesefindingshaveimportantimplicationsforthedesignoffuturethinfilmcoatingsystems.
Introduction
Thinfilmcoatingsareanattractivedeliverysystemfordrugsandotheractiveingredientsduetotheirrapidreleasepropertiesandeaseofuse.Akeyfeatureofthesecoatingsistheirabilitytodissolverapidlyinthemouthorotherbiologicalenvironments,therebyprovidingquickandefficientdeliveryoftheactiveingredient.Toachievethis,thinfilmcoatingsaretypicallypreparedbyencapsulatingtheactiveingredientwithinapolymermatrixthatdissolvesrapidlyuponcontactwithsalivaorotherbiologicalfluids.
Oneoftheimportantfactorsindeterminingtheeffectivenessofthinfilmcoatingsistheirslidingbehavior.Thisreferstotheabilityofthecoatingtoslideoverthesurfaceofthetongueorotheroraltissueduringthedissolutionprocess.Effectiveslidingbehaviorisessentialforensuringevenandcompletecoverageoftheoralcavity,allowingforefficientdeliveryoftheactiveingredient.
Methods
Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheslidingpropertiesofarapidlydissolvingthinfilmcoatingsystemusingvariousanalyticaltechniques.Thecoatingsystemwaspreparedbyencapsulatingtheactiveingredientwithinahydroxypropylcellulosematrix,whichwasthencoatedontoasubstratematerial(i.e.afilm).Thecoatingthicknesswasvariedfrom10to100micronsinordertostudyitseffectonslidingbehavior.
Theslidingpropertiesofthecoatingsweremeasuredusingacustom-builtslidingapparatus,whichconsistedofaglassslideandamotorizedlinearstage.Thecoatingswereplacedontotheglassslideandthenmovedacrossthestageatvariousspeedsandforces.Theslidingbehaviorofthecoatingwasmeasuredusingadigitalforcegaugeandanopticalmicroscope,whichprovided
