Abstract
Thethree-phasethree-levelmatrixconverter(TPTLMC)isapopularsolutionforvariablespeedmotordrives.Inthispaper,thetopologyofTPTLMCispresented,alongwithitsoperatingprinciplesandmodulationstrategies.ThesimulationandexperimentalresultsareprovidedtodemonstratethefeasibilityandeffectivenessoftheTPTLMCinmotordriveapplications.
Introduction
Thethree-phasethree-levelmatrixconverter(TPTLMC)isapowerelectronicconverterthatcanconvertACvoltageandfrequencywithouttheuseofbulkyandexpensiveDC-linkcapacitors.Itisusedinvariousapplicationssuchasinvertersforrenewableenergysystems,high-powermotordrives,andhigh-speedtrains.TPTLMCprovidesanumberofadvantagesovertraditionalpowerelectronicsconverterssuchasreducedweight,size,andcost,andimprovedefficiencyandreliability.Inthispaper,theTPTLMCtopologyandoperatingprinciplesarepresented,alongwithmodulationstrategies,andsimulationandexperimentalresultsareprovidedtodemonstratethefeasibilityandeffectivenessoftheTPTLMC.
TopologyofTPTLMC
TheTPTLMCiscomposedofsixbidirectionalswitchesandninediodesthatareconnectedinamatrixstructure.TheACinputpowerisfedtothreeindependentpairsoftheswitchesanddiodes.Theoutputsoftheswitchesareconnectedtoacommonoutputfilter,whicheliminatesthehigh-frequencyswitchingcomponentsfromtheoutputwaveform.Thefilteralsohelpsinregulatingandstabilizingtheoutputvoltage.TheTPTLMCcanoperateinbothcurrentcontrolmodeandvoltagecontrolmode.
OperatingPrinciplesofTPTLMC
TheTPTLMCisbasedontheconceptofdirectAC-to-ACconversion,withtheabilitytocontrolbothvoltageandfrequency.UnliketraditionalconvertersthatuseaDC-linkcapacitortostoreenergy,TPTLMCtransfersenergydirectlyfromtheinputtotheoutputusingtheswitchinganddiodeelements.Theswitchesarecontrolledbyapulsewidthmodulation(PWM)signaltogeneratethedesiredoutputvoltagewaveform.TheTPTLMCcanoperatewithawiderangeofinputandoutputvoltageandfrequency,makingitanidealsolutionforvariablespeedmotordriveapplications.
