Introduction
Ceriumdioxide(CeO2)isawidelyutilizedmaterialduetoitsremarkablecatalytic,optical,andelectronicproperties.CeO2iscommonlyknownasceria,whichisanessentialcomponentinvariousindustrialapplications,includingexhaustcatalysts,metaloxidegassensors,solidoxidefuelcells,andchemicalloopingcombustion.Furthermore,CeO2isusedintheproductionofglass,catalyticconverters,andelectronics.Inrecentyears,researchershavefocusedonthedevelopmentofCeO2-basedcatalystsduetotheirabilitytoimprovechemicalreactions’efficiency.
Background
CeO2isapromisingcatalyst,andresearchershavefocusedonitscatalyticpropertiesowingtoitsredoxpotentials,oxygenstoragecapacity,andlatticedefects.CeO2hasvariousoxidationstates,rangingfromCe(III)toCe(IV),duetoitseaseofoxidation-reductionreactions.CeO2’soxygenvacancyconcentrationsinfluencethecatalyticproperties,andtheoxygenstoragecapacityprovidesasurplusofoxygentothereaction.CeO2catalyzesreactionsbysupplyingorscavengingoxygenandregulatingtheredoxstatesofothertransitionmetals.ThecatalyticmechanismsofCeO2havebeenstudiedextensivelyinthelastdecade,involvingacidity,basicity,polarity,andchargetransferatthesolid/gasinterface.
RecentAdvancements
ThepurposeofthisspecialissueistopresentrecentadvancesinCeO2-basedcatalysts’design,synthesis,andapplications.Thecontributionsofthisissuecoverabroadrangeoftopics,includingnewsynthesismethods,dopingstrategies,andcharacterizationtechniques.Additionally,theapplicationofCeO2-basedcatalystsindiversereactionssuchasCOoxidation,NOxreduction,andmethanecombustioniswell-covered.
