Abstract:
Therapidadvancementofremotesensingtechnologyhasresultedinanexponentialincreaseinthevolumeofacquiredimagedata.Efficientcompressionalgorithmsplayacrucialroleinreducingthestoragerequirementsandtransmissionbandwidthoftheseimages.Inthispaper,weproposeanovelimagecompressionalgorithmbasedonwaveletsubbandentropy,whichaimstoachievehighcompressionratioswhilepreservingimportantinformation.
1.Introduction
Remotesensingimagesprovidevaluableinformationforvariousapplications,includingagriculture,environmentalmonitoring,anddisastermanagement.However,thelargesizeoftheseimagesposeschallengesintermsofstorageandtransmission.Therefore,itisessentialtodevelopefficientcompressiontechniquestoaddresstheseissues.Inthissection,wediscusstheimportanceofimagecompressioninremotesensingandthemotivationbehindourproposedalgorithm.
2.OverviewofExistingCompressionTechniques
Thissectionprovidesanoverviewofconventionalimagecompressiontechniques,includinglosslessandlossycompressionmethods,suchasHuffmancoding,run-lengthencoding,andtransform-basedmethodslikediscretecosinetransform(DCT)anddiscretewavelettransform(DWT).Wehighlighttheiradvantagesandlimitationsinthecontextofremotesensingimages.
3.WaveletSubbandEntropy
Waveletsubbandentropymeasurestherandomnessorinformationcontentofeachsubbandofadecomposedimage.Thissectionexplainstheconceptofwaveletsubbandentropyanditsapplicationinimagecompression.Wedescribethecalculationprocessanddiscusshowitcanbeusedtodeterminetheimportanceofeachsubbandduringcompression.
4.ProposedCompressionAlgorithm
Inthissection,wepresentourproposedalgorithmindetail.Thealgorithmconsistsofthefollowingsteps:
-Imagedecomposition:Theoriginalimageisdecomposedintodifferentfrequencysubbandsusingwavelettransform.
-Subbandentropycalculation:Theentropyofeachsubbandiscalculatedusingwaveletsubbandentropy.
-Importancedetermination:Theimportanceofeachsubbandisassessedbasedonitsentropyvalue.
