Abstract:
Polyvinylchloride(PVC)resiniswidelyusedinvariousindustrialapplicationsduetoitsexcellentproperties.Thedegreeofpolymerization(DP)ofPVCresinisanimportantparameterthataffectsitsmechanical,thermal,andprocessingproperties.Therefore,itiscrucialtoaccuratelydeterminetheDPofPVCresin.Inthispaper,weproposearapidandaccuratemethodfordeterminingtheDPofPVCresin.Theexperimentalprocedureinvolvesthemeasurementofinherentviscosity,determinationofnumber-averagemolecularweight,andfinallythecalculationofDPusingestablishedequations.Theproposedmethodoffersasignificantimprovementintermsoftime,cost,andaccuracycomparedtotraditionalmethods.
1.Introduction
Polyvinylchloride(PVC)resin,athermoplasticpolymer,possessesawiderangeofdesirablecharacteristics,includingchemicalresistance,flameretardancy,andexcellentprocessability.ThepropertiesofPVCresingreatlydependonthedegreeofpolymerization(DP),whichisthenumberofrepeatingunitsinthepolymerchain.AccuratedeterminationofDPisessentialasitaffectsthemechanical,thermal,andprocessingpropertiesofPVCresin.VariousmethodshavebeendevelopedtomeasureDP,includingviscositymeasurements,sizeexclusionchromatography(SEC),andgelpermeationchromatography(GPC).However,thesetechniquesaretime-consuming,expensive,andrequirespecializedequipment.Therefore,thereisaneedforarapidandaccuratemethodfordeterminingtheDPofPVCresin.
2.Methodology
Theproposedmethodconsistsofthreemainsteps:measurementofinherentviscosity,determinationofnumber-averagemolecularweight,andcalculationofDP.

InherentviscosityismeasuredusingaUbbelohdeviscometer.AsolutionofPVCresinandasuitablesolvent(e.g.,tetrahydrofuran)isprepared.Theviscosityofthesolutionismeasuredataspecifictemperature.Theinherentviscosity[η]isthencalculatedusingtheequation[η]=(ln(t/t0))/c,wheretistheflowtimeofthesolution,t0istheflowtimeofthepuresolvent,andcistheconcentrationofthePVCsolution.
