Introduction:
Withtheincreasingconcernaboutclimatechangeandenvironmentalsustainability,thereisagrowingdemandforalternativematerialsthatcanreplaceconventionalplastics.Carbondioxide-basedpolymericmaterials,alsoknownasCO2polymersorCO2-basedpolymers,haveemergedasapromisingsolution.Thesematerialsutilizecarbondioxideasafeedstock,therebyreducingtherelianceonfossilfuelsandminimizingthecarbonfootprintassociatedwiththeirproduction.Thispaperaimstoconductalifecycleassessment(LCA)ofCO2polymerstoevaluatetheirenvironmentalimpactthroughouttheirlifecycle.
1.RawMaterialAcquisition:
Thefirststageofthelifecycleanalysisinvolvestheacquisitionofrawmaterials.CO2polymersrelyoncarbondioxideasakeycomponent,whichcanbecapturedfromvarioussourcessuchasindustrialemissionsordirectaircapture.Comparedtopetroleum-derivedfeedstocks,thecarbondioxideusedinCO2polymershasasignificantlylowerimpactongreenhousegasemissions.
2.Production:
Theproductionstageinvolvestheconversionofcarbondioxideandotherrawmaterialsintopolymericmaterials.Oneofthecommonlyusedmethodsisthecopolymerizationofcarbondioxideandepoxidesorcycliccarbonates,resultingintheformationofpolycarbonatesorpolyurethanes.TheproductionprocessofCO2polymersrequiresenergy,catalysts,andadditionalchemicals.Itiscrucialtoassessthepotentialenvironmentalimpactsassociatedwiththeseinputs,includingenergyconsumption,emissions,andwastegeneration.
3.Use:
TheusephaseofCO2polymersinvolvestheirincorporationintovariousapplicationssuchaspackagingmaterials,constructioncomponents,orautomotiveparts.Comparedtoconventionalplastics,CO2polymersoftenpossessdesirablepropertiessuchashighstrength,thermalstability,andchemicalresistance.Theirdurabilityandextendedlifespancontributetoreducingtheoverallenvironmentalimpactduringtheusephase.
