Background ThetailingsoftheCentralAfricanCopper-Cobaltorebeltcontainahighconcentrationofcobalt.Therefore,itisimportanttodevelopaefficientprocesstoextractcobaltfromthetailings.Currently,themostwidelyusedmethodfortherecoveryofcobaltfromtailingsishydrometallurgicalprocessing,whichinvolvestheleachingofthetailingswithappropriatereducingagents,followedbytheseparationandpurificationofcobaltfromtheresultingleachliquor. Methodology Inthisstudy,wecomparedtheeffectivenessofdifferentreducingagentsintheleachingofcobaltfromtailingsfromaspecificmineintheCentralAfricanCopper-Cobaltorebelt.Thereducingagentsusedinthisstudyweresodiummetabisulfite,ferroussulfate,andsodiumsulfide.Theleachingtestswerecarriedoutatambienttemperatureandpressure,andthepHoftheleachsolutionwasmaintainedataconstantvaluebytheadditionofsulfuricacid. Results Thetestresultsshowedthatallthreereducingagentswereeffectiveinleachingcobaltfromthetailings.However,theeffectivenessofthereducingagentsvaried.Sodiummetabisulfitewasthemosteffectivereducingagent,followedbyferroussulfateandthensodiumsulfide.Theleachingefficiencyofcobaltusingsodiummetabisulfitewasupto95%,whereasferroussulfateandsodiumsulfidewere91%and87%respectively.TheresultsalsoshowedthatthepHoftheleachingsolutionhadasignificanteffectonleachingefficiency. Discussion Theresultsofthisstudyindicatedthatthechoiceofreducingagentcanhaveasignificanteffectontheleachingofcobaltfromtailings.Sodiummetabisulfitewasthemosteffectivereducingagentinleachingcobaltfromthetailings,whichwasattributedtoitsstrongreducingability.Ferroussul
