Abstract:
Coastalsandmininghasbecomeasignificantenvironmentalconcerninmanyregionsacrosstheglobeduetoitsdetrimentalimpactonthecoastalecosystem.SangiheIslandinIndonesiaisonesuchlocationwheresandminingactivitieshaveincreasedinrecentyears.ThisstudyaimstoassesstheviabilityofsandminingonthebeachesofSangiheIslandbyconductingaseriesofexperiments.
1.Introduction:
Coastalsandmininginvolvestheextractionofsandfrombeachesandcoastalareasforvariouspurposes,includingconstruction,landreclamation,andmanufacturing.Whileitprovideseconomicbenefits,itoftenleadstonegativeecologicalconsequences,suchasbeacherosion,lossofmarinehabitat,andcoastallandscapealteration.ThisstudyfocusesonSangiheIsland,whichhasexperiencedasurgeinsandminingactivities.Theobjectiveistoevaluatethefeasibilityofcontinuedsandminingonthisislandbyconductingexperimentalinvestigations.
2.Methodology:
Thestudyutilizesacombinationoffieldsurveys,laboratoryexperiments,anddataanalysistoassesstheimpactsofsandminingonSangiheIsland'scoastalenvironment.Thefollowingmethodsareemployed:
2.1FieldSurveys:
-Identifyingtheextentandscaleofcurrentsandminingactivities
-Mappingtheaffectedcoastalareas
-Conductinginterviewsandgatheringinformationfromlocalstakeholders,includingfishermen,residents,andsandminers
2.2LaboratoryExperiments:
-Collectingsandsamplesfromtheminedareasandnearbyunaffectedbeaches
-Analyzingthephysicalandchemicalpropertiesofthesandsamples,includinggrainsizedistribution,mineralcomposition,andorganiccontent
-Evaluatingthechangesinbeachmorphologyandsedimentdynamicsthroughwavetankexperiments
-Assessingtheimpactofsandminingoncoastalvegetationandwildlife
2.3DataAnalysis:
-Comparingthephysicalandchemicalpropertiesofminedsandwithnaturalsandtodeterminequalitydifferences
-Evaluatingthepotentialforbeacherosionandreclamationchallenges
-Analyzingthesocio-economicaspectsofsandmining,includingemploymentopportunitiesandrevenuegeneration
