Abstract:
Foraminiferalshellshavebeenextensivelyutilizedasgeochemicalproxiestoreconstructpastenvironmentalconditions.Inthisstudy,wefocusedonthenortheasternslopeoftheSouthChinaSea,acrucialregionforunderstandingthepaleoclimateandpaleoenvironmentalchangesinthewesternPacificOcean.TogainabetterunderstandingoftheMgCaratiovariationsinforaminiferalshells,aninnovativemicroscaleanalysistechniquewasemployed,providingvaluableinsightsintopastglobalclimatedynamicsinthisimportantregion.OurresultshighlightthepotentialofforaminiferalshellsforreconstructingpaleoenvironmentalchangesintheSouthChinaSeaandoffernewopportunitiesforpaleoclimatestudies.
Introduction:
ThenortheasternslopeoftheSouthChinaSea,locatedinahighlydynamictectonicsetting,isofgreatinterestforstudyingpaleoenvironmentalchangesduetoitsstrategiclocationbetweentropicalandsubtropicalclimatezones.Foraminifera,agroupofmarineprotistscharacterizedbytheircalciumcarbonateshells,arewidelyusedasindicatorsofenvironmentalchangesinmarineecosystems.TheMgCaratioinforaminiferalshellshasproventobeavaluablegeochemicalproxyforreconstructingpastvariationsinseawatertemperatureandsalinity.However,previousstudiesofforaminiferalMgCaratiosmainlyreliedonbulkmeasurements,obscuringpotentialmicroscalevariations.Inthisstudy,weaimedtodevelopaninsitumicroscaleanalysistechniqueforMgCaratioanalysisinforaminiferalshells,advancingourunderstandingofthepastenvironmentalconditionsinthisregion.
Methodology:
ToanalyzetheMgCaratioinforaminiferalshellsatamicroscalelevel,weutilizedacombinationoftechniquesincludinglaserablationinductivelycoupledplasmamassspectrometry(LA-ICP-MS)andscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM).TheLA-ICP-MStechniqueallowedustodeterminetheMgCaratiowithhighprecisionandspatialresolution,whileSEMprovidedinsightsintotheshellultrastructure,aidingintheinterpretationofthegeochemicaldata.Theanalyseswereconductedonwell-preserved,fossilizedfo
