Abstract:
TheIPv6NeighborDiscoveryProtocol(NDP)isafundamentalcomponentoftheIPv6networkingarchitecture.ItenablesIPv6nodesonthesamelinktodiscoverandcommunicatewitheachother.However,therelianceonNDPfornetworkoperationsalsointroducespotentialsecurityvulnerabilities.ThispaperfocusesonthedesignandimplementationofanattacktoolthatexploitsweaknessesintheNDPtolaunchvariousattacksonIPv6networks.
1.Introduction
WiththeexhaustionofIPv4addresses,IPv6hasgainedmomentumasthenext-generationInternetprotocol.However,theincreasedcomplexityandexpandedaddressspaceinIPv6hasopeneddoorsfornewattackvectors.TheNeighborDiscoveryProtocol(NDP)isakeyprotocolinIPv6,responsibleforaddressresolution,neighbordiscoveries,androuteradvertisements.ThispaperaddressesthedesignandimplementationofanattacktooltoexploitvulnerabilitiesintheNDPandhighlighttheneedforrobustsecuritymeasuresinIPv6networks.
2.OverviewofIPv6NeighborDiscoveryProtocol
ThissectionprovidesacomprehensiveoverviewoftheIPv6NeighborDiscoveryProtocol.ItcoversthevariousmessagesusedbyNDP,includingNeighborSolicitation(NS),NeighborAdvertisement(NA),RouterSolicitation(RS),andRouterAdvertisement(RA).Additionally,itexploresthefunctionsofNDP,suchasDuplicateAddressDetection(DAD),addressresolution,androuterdiscovery.
3.VulnerabilitiesinIPv6NeighborDiscoveryProtocol
ThissectionidentifiesanddiscussesthevulnerabilitiesintheNDPthatcanbeexploitedtolaunchattacksonIPv6networks.SomeofthevulnerabilitiesincludeNeighborCachePoisoning,RouterAdvertisementFlooding,RogueRouterAdvertisement,NeighborDiscoveryDoS(DenialofService),andAddressResolutionDoS.Itexplainshowthesevulnerabilitiescanbeabusedtocompromisenetworksecurityanddisruptnormalnetworkoperations.
