Introduction:
DDSorDirectDigitalSynthesisisamethodofgeneratingarbitrarywaveformsusingDigital-to-Analogconverters.Inthispaper,wediscussthedesignofanAmplitudeModulation(AM)demodulationsystemusingFPGA-basedDDStechnology.
Objectives:
TheobjectiveofthisprojectistodesignanddevelopanAMdemodulationdemonstratorusingDDStechnology.Thesystemisaimedatdemonstratingtheprinciplesofamplitudemodulationanddemodulation,whileshowcasingthecapabilitiesofDDStechnology.Thesystemshouldbecapableofgeneratingandmodulatingasinusoidalwaveform,modulatingitusinganaudiosignal,anddemodulatingittorecovertheoriginalaudiosignal.
Designandimplementation:
ThesystememploysaXilinxFPGAasthecoreprocessingunit.TheFPGAisprogrammedtogeneratethecarriersinusoidalwaveformusingDDStechnology.Thefrequencyandphaseofthecarrierwaveformcanbecontrolledusingswitchesandpotentiometersonthesystemboard.Theamplitudeofthecarrierisalsoadjustableusingadigitalpotentiometer.
Theaudiosignaltobemodulatedisinputusinga3.5mmjack.Theincomingaudiosignalisamplifiedandfilteredusingasimpleaudioamplifiercircuit.Theoutputoftheamplifierisusedtomodulatethecarrierwaveformusingamplitudemodulation.Themodulatedsignalisthenfedtoalow-passfiltertoremoveanyhigh-frequencycomponents.
Thedemodulationprocessinvolvesmixingthemodulatedsignalwiththecarrierwaveform,whichyieldsatwo-frequencysignal.Thissignalcanbefilteredtoremovethecarrierfrequency,leavingonlythemodulatedaudiosignal.Therecoveredaudiosignalisthenamplifiedandfedtoaspeakerforplayback.
Results:
TheDDS-basedAMdemodulationdemonstratorwassuccessfullydesignedandimplemented.Thesystemiscapableofgeneratingacarrierwaveformwithadjustablefrequency,phase,andamplitude.Theaudiosignalcanbemodulatedwiththecarrierwaveformusingamplitudemodulation.Thesystemisalsocapableofdemodulatingthemodulatedsignalandrecoveringtheoriginalaudiosignal.
Conclusion:
DDStechnologyisapowerfultoolforgeneratingprogrammablewaveforms.Thetechnologycanbeusedtoimplementvariousmodulationschemes,suchasAM,FM,andPM.TheAMdemodulatio
