Afghanistanisnowtheworld'slargestexporterofheroin,andtheopiumusedtoproduceit,supplying87percentoftheworldmarket.AnditiscreatinganinfrastructureofcrimeandcorruptionthatthreatensthegovernmentofPresidentHamidKarzai.
TheherointradebeginswithfieldsofopiumpoppiesgrowninalmosteveryprovinceofAfghanistan.Lastyear,accordingtotheU.S.statedepartment,206,000hectareswerecultivated,ahalfamillionacres,producing4,000tonsofopium,mostofwhichwasconvertedinto400tonsofillegalmorphineandheroininlaboratoriesaroundthecountry.

"Itisnotonlythelargestheroinproducerintheworld,206,000hectaresisthelargestamountofheroinorofanydrugthatIthinkhaseverbeenproducedbyanyonecountryinanygivenyear,"saysRobertCharles,whountillastspringwasassistantsecretaryofstateforInternationalNarcoticsandLawEnforcement,overseeinganti-drugoperationsinAfghanistan.
