WeknowfromGayTalese'sbookHonorThyFatherthatbeingaprofessionalmobsterisn'tallsunshineandroses.
Moreoften,it'stheboredomofstuffyroomsandabaddietofcarry-outfood,punctuatedbybrief,terribleburstsofviolence.Thisisexactlythefeelof"TheGodfather,"whichbrushesasidetheflashyglamourofthetraditionalgangsterpictureandgivesuswhat'sleft:fiercetriballoyalties,deadlylittleneighborhoodquarrelsinBrooklyn,andaformofvengeancetomatcheveryaffront.
TheremarkablethingaboutMarioPuzo'snovelwasthewayitseemedtobetoldfromtheinsideout;hedidn'tgiveusaworldofinternationalintrigue,butaprivateclubasconstrictedastheseventhgrade.Everybodykneweverybodyelseandhadaprettyshrewdhunchwhattheywereupto.
Themovie(basedonascriptlaboredoverforsometimebyPuzoandthenfinallygivenform,Isuspect,bydirectorFrancisFordCoppola)getsthesamefeel.WetendtoidentifywithDonCorleone'sfamilynotbecausewediggangwars,butbecausewehavebeenwiththemfromthebeginning,watchingthemwaitforbattlewhilesittingatthekitchentableandeatingchowmeinoutofpapercartons.
"TheGodfather"himselfisnoteventhecentralcharacterinthedrama.Thatpositiongoestotheyoungest,brightestson,Michael,whounderstandsthenatureofhisfather'spositionwhilerevisinghisold-fashionedways.TheGodfather'sroleinthefamilyenterpriseisdescribedbyhisname;hestandsoutsidethenextgenerationwhichwillcarryonand,hopefully,anglethefamilyintolegitimateenterprises.
ThosewhohavereadthenovelmaybesurprisedtofindMichaelatthecenterofthemovie,insteadofDonCorleone.Infact,thisissimplyaneconomicalwayforCoppolatogetattheheartofthePuzostory,whichdealtwiththetransferofpowerwithinthefamily.MarlonBrando,whoplaystheGodfatherasashrewd,unbreakableoldman,actuallyhasthecharacterleadinthemovie;AlPacino,withabrilliantlydevelopedperformanceasMichael,isthelead.
ButBrando'sperformanceisaskillfulthrowaway,eventhoughitearnedhimanAcademyAwardforbestactor.Hisvoiceiswheezyandwhispery,andhisphysicalmovementsdeliberatelylackprecision;theeffectisofamansoaccustomedtopowerthathenolongerneedstoremindothers.
