威尔逊夫人夜里往窗外看时，看见有个人企图打开史密斯先生家的窗户。她想那一定是个贼。于是她迅速拿起一根棍子，跑进花园，用棍子朝那人头上打去。
第二天早晨，她去敲史密斯先生家的门。史密斯先生打开门，对威尔逊夫人说：“昨天出门时忘了带钥匙，我回来时不想吵醒妻子，于是我想从窗户进去。我正开窗户时被人打了一棍子。”
威尔逊夫人听到这里，不知道该回答。
威尔逊夫人夜里觉得有些口渴，所以她起床去喝水。夜晚宁静而又微明。她往窗外看了看，明月穿破层层云雾露出了她的容颜，月光撒满了整个花园，突然她看见一个人正在开史密斯先生家的窗。她想那是个坏蛋。没来得及多想，她抄起一根棍子，悄悄走进花园。趁那个人还没察觉，她朝他头上打去。
“哎哟!”她听到的是史密斯先生的声音。原来是史密斯先生。因为没带钥匙，史密斯先生想从窗户进去，以免吵醒他的妻子。
