Andthen,finally,IwanttothankMarkandGaryforshowingmeoneofthebiggeststeelplantsinAmerica.Andtheytoldmethatfolksareproudtohavebeenmakingsteelrighthereforacentury--100years--righthere.(Applause.)Andtheyexplainedthat,today,thesteelyoumakeinClevelandissomeofthestrongestyou"llfindanywhereintheworld.It"soneofthemostproductiveplantsintheworld.Bestworkersintheworld.(Applause.)
Andwhat"sremarkableis,whenyouthinkaboutit,gobacktowherethisplantwasjustafewyearsago.Theeconomywasinfreefall,autoindustryonthebrinkofcollapse.Andthatmeantdemandforsteelhaddriedup.Theblastfurnaceswentquiet.About1,200steelworkerspunchedoutforwhatmighthavebeenthelasttime.Andthatallcameattheendofadecadewhenthemiddleclasswasalreadyworkingharderandharderjusttogetby,andnearlyoneinthreeAmericanmanufacturingjobshadvanished--alotofthemgoingoverseas.Andthatcouldhavedevastatedthismunityforgood.
