Thisisatrainingground.MyhighschoolisChicago,diverseandsegregatedonpurpose.Sociallinesarebarbedwire.Labelslike“Regulars”and“Honors”resonate.IamanHonorsbutgohomewithRegularstudentswhoaresoldiersinterritorythatownsthem.ThisisatraininggroundtosortouttheRegularsfromtheHonors,areoccurringcyclebuilttorecyclethetrashofthissystem.
Trainedatayoungagetocapitalize,letterstaughtnowthatcapitalismraisesyoubutyouhavetosteponsomeoneelsetogetthere.Thisisatraininggroundwhereonegroupistaughttoleadandtheotherismadetofollow.Nowondersomanyofmypeoplespitbars,becausethetruthishardtoswallow.Theneedfordegreeshasleftsomanypeoplefrozen.
Homeworkisstressful,butwhenyougohomeeverydayandyourhomeiswork,youdon'twanttopickupanyassignments.Readingtextbooksisstressful,butreadingdoesnotmatterwhenyoufeelyourstoryisalreadywritten,eitherdeadorgettingbooked.Takingtestsisstressful,butbubblinginaScantrondoesnotstopbulletsfrombursting.
Iheareducationsystemsarefailing,butIbelievethey'resucceedingatwhatthey'rebuilttodo--totrainyou,tokeepyouontrack,totrackdownanAmericandreamthathasfailedsomanyofusall.
