Introduction
Asglobalizationcontinuestospread,communicationhasbecomeincreasinglyimportant.Englishhasbecomethegloballanguageofbusiness,education,andcommunication,andithasbecomeessentialfornon-nativespeakerstodemonstratetheirproficiencyinthelanguage.TheEnglishProficiencyTest(EPT)isoneimportanttoolusedtomeasureEnglishproficiency.Meanwhile,theCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReferenceforLanguages(CEFR)providesacomprehensiveandunifiedframeworkforlanguagelearning,teachingandassessment.ThispaperaimstodiscusstherelationshipbetweentheEnglishProficiencyTestandtheCEFR,andhowtheycanbeusedincombinationtoassessandvalidateEnglishlanguageability.
TheEnglishProficiencyTest(EPT)
TheEPTisastandardizedexamdesignedtoevaluateEnglishproficiencyfornon-nativespeakers.ThereareseveraltypesofEPTs,includingtheTOEFLandIELTS,whicharewidelyrecognizedandacceptedbyuniversitiesandinstitutionsaroundtheworld.TheEPTmainlymeasureslanguageproficiencyinfourdomains:reading,writing,listening,andspeaking.Itisusedtodeterminetheproficiencyofnon-nativespeakerstouseEnglishinacademic,professional,andsocialsettings.
TheCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReferenceforLanguages(CEFR)
TheCEFRisalanguageproficiencyframeworkdesignedtoprovideacommonbasisforlearning,teaching,andassessinglanguages.Itdivideslanguageproficiencyintosixlevels,fromA1(beginner)toC2(mastery),withspecificdescriptorsforeachlevel.TheCEFRprovidesdetaileddescriptorsforlanguageabilitiesinfourdomains:listening,reading,speaking,andwriting.Itisusedtodeterminetheleveloflanguageproficiencyoflearners,andtofacilitateinternationalmobilityforlearnersandteachers,andtopromotecooperationinlanguagelearningandteaching.
RelationshipbetweentheEPTandCEFR
