Introduction
WithChinabecomingincreasinglyglobalized,theimportanceofEnglishlanguageskillscannotbeoveremphasized.Englishiscurrentlythemostwidelyspokenlanguageandisconsideredthelinguafrancaoftheworld.ThishasledtomanyChinesestudentsandprofessionalslearningEnglishasasecondlanguage(ESL).However,learninganewlanguageisnotwithoutchallenges,andnon-nativespeakersoftenencounterdifficulties.ThisstudyaimstoidentifyandanalyzethefactorsthatcontributetotheerosionofEnglishlanguageproficiencyamongnon-EnglishmajorstudentsinChina.
Background
Chinahasbeenexperiencingrapideconomicgrowthinrecentyears,whichhasledtoanincreaseininternationalbusinessandtrade.Asaresult,therehasbeenagrowingdemandforEnglish-speakingprofessionalsinthejobmarket.ItisthereforenotsurprisingthattherehasbeenanincreaseinthenumberofChinesestudentsseekingtomastertheEnglishlanguage.
However,learningEnglishasasecondlanguageisnotaneasytask.Thisisevidencedbythefactthatmanynon-EnglishmajorstudentsinChinaencounterdifficultiesinmaintainingtheirproficiencyinEnglishaftertheyleaveschool.ThisisknownastheerosionofEnglishlanguageproficiency.Thefactorsresponsibleforthisphenomenonarenotwellunderstood.
Methodology
Thestudywasconductedusingasurveyquestionnaire.Asampleof150non-EnglishmajorstudentsfromtwouniversitiesinChinawasselectedforthestudy.ThequestionnairewasdesignedtocollectinformationonthefactorsthatcontributetotheerosionofEnglishlanguageproficiencyamongnon-EnglishmajorstudentsinChina.
Results
ThestudyfoundthattherewereseveralfactorsthatcontributedtotheerosionofEnglishlanguageproficiencyamongnon-EnglishmajorstudentsinChina.Thesefactorsinclude:
1.InadequateEnglishproficiencylevels:Manynon-EnglishmajorstudentsinChinahaveinadequateEnglishproficiencylevels,whichmakesitdifficultforthemtomaintaintheirproficiencyafterleavingschool.
2.LimitedexposuretotheEnglishlanguage:Non-EnglishmajorstudentsinChinahavelimitedexposuretotheEnglishlanguage,whichmakesitdifficultforthemtomaintaintheirproficiency.
