Introduction:
EnglishvocabularyisacriticalaspectofEnglishlanguageproficiency.ItplaysavitalroleineffectivecommunicationforEnglishlanguagelearners.ResearchhasshownthatEnglishvocabularyhasastrongimpactonstudents’overallEnglishlanguageproficiencyandspecificallyontheirwritingskills(Chen&Ge,2012).Therefore,thisstudyaimstoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenthevocabularyrichnessofEnglishMajorstudentsandthequalityoftheirwriting.
Literaturereview:
Intoday'sglobalworld,Englishisoneofthemostwidelyspokenlanguagesforcommunication.DuetoglobalizationandtheincreasingimportanceofEnglish,academicinstitutionsworldwidehaveintroducedEnglishasacompulsorysubject.Consequently,theeducationinstitutionshavestartedfocusingonvocabularyacquisitionanditsimpactonlanguageproficiency.
Accordingtoresearch,vocabularysizeiscloselyrelatedtothedevelopmentofstudentlanguageskills,suchaslistening,speaking,reading,andwriting(Bogaards&Laufer,2004).Alternatively,alackofvocabularyhinderstheabilityoflearnerstocommunicateeffectively,whichcannegativelyaffecttheiracademicperformance.
Moreover,writingisanessentialcomponentofEnglishlanguageproficiencythatneedsextensivevocabulary.Therelevantliteraturesuggeststhatstudentswhohaveawiderangeofvocabularytendtowriteeffectivelyandefficientlycomparedtothosewithalimitedvocabularybase(Elahi,2019).Likewise,astudyconductedbyArslan(2013)revealedthatstudents'productivevocabularyispositivelyrelatedtoessaywritingqualityinEnglish.
Methodology:
ThestudypopulationwasEnglishMajorstudentsfromaChineseuniversity.Thesamplesizewas50undergraduatestudents,including25malesand25females.Tomeasurethevocabularysize,theparticipantscompletedastandardizedvocabularysizetest.Formeasuringthequalityofwriting,writingqualitywasevaluatedbytwoEnglishteachersindependentlyonascaleof0to10basedoncohesion,coherence,grammaticalaccuracy,andvocabularyrichnessoftheparticipants.
