Althoughtechnologicalprogressinthe21stcenturyhasenabledpeopletoconstructamazingbuildings,itdoesnotmeanthatinthepastthatpeoplecouldraiselessimpressivestructures.Historyknowsmanyexamplesofincredibleanduniquearchitecturaldecisions:theNotreDamecathedral,theEgyptianpyramids,theEiffelTower,andmanyothers.Amongthem,thefamousTajMahalshouldbementionedwithoutdoubt.
TheTajMahalwasconstructed(ortobemoreaccurate,orderedtobeconstructed)bytheIndianrulerShahJahaninthe17thcentury.ItisamausoleumnamedafterMumtazMahal,thebelovedloverofShahJahan,frommaterialsincludinglapislazuli,jade,crystal,amethyst,andsoon.Thebuilding’scentraldomeisslightlymorethan70metershigh,andissurroundedbyfourminarets.AccordingtoIslamictradition,onthewallsthereareversesfromtheQuranwrittenincalligraphy.Insidethemausoleum,thereisafalsetombofMumtazMahal(alsocalledcenotaph),whereastherealsarcophaguswithherremainsliesatthegardenlevel.
TheTajMahalcomplexalsoincludesamaingateway,agardenwithpoolsofwater,aredsandstonemosque,andanidenticalbuildingcalledjawab.ShahJahanwantedtobuildthesecondmausoleumacrosstheriver,asgrandioseastheTajMahal,tohavehisownremainsburiedthere.Healsowantedthetwomausoleumstobeconnectedwithbridges.But,unfortunately,theseplansremainedonpaper.
Aurangzeb,ShahJahan’sthirdson,deposedhisfatherin1658,andbecametherulerofthecountry.ShahJahanendedupunderhousearrest,lockedupinatoweroftheRedFortatAgra.Fromthere,hecouldseeTajMahal.Herestedinpeacein1666,andhisbodywasburiednexttoMumtazMahal.
