Introduction
Englishhasbecomeagloballanguageandmasteringithasbecomeindispensableforcommunicationinvariousfields,includingeducation,business,andentertainment.InChina,Englishisamandatorysubjectintheeducationsystem,andmanystudentschoosetostudyEnglishastheirmajorinuniversities.Asaresult,itisimportanttostudythewrittenlanguageproficiencyofChineseEnglishmajors.Inthispaper,wewillexplorethemultipledimensionsandcharacteristicsofformalwrittenlanguageproducedbyChineseEnglishmajors.
LiteratureReview
ThewrittenlanguageofChineseEnglishmajorshasbeenwidelystudiedinrecentyears.Someresearcheshavefocusedoncertaindimensionsofwrittenlanguage,suchasvocabularyuse,syntax,anddiscourseorganization.Forexample,ChenandBaker(2010)foundthatChineseEnglishmajorstendtooverusecertainwordsandfailtoutilizesynonymseffectively.LiandLi(2018)exploredthesyntacticcomplexityofwrittenEnglishproducedbyChineseEnglishmajorsandfoundthattheytendtousesimplersentencestructures.Meanwhile,JiangandWang(2019)investigatedthediscourseorganizationofEnglishacademicwritingbyChineseEnglishmajorsandfoundthattheirwritinglackscoherenceandcohesion.
However,thereisstillalackofcomprehensiveresearchonthemultipledimensionsandcharacteristicsofformalwrittenEnglishproducedbyChineseEnglishmajors.Therefore,thisstudyaimstofillthisgapbyexploringdifferentdimensionsofwrittenlanguageandanalyzingtheircharacteristicsamongChineseEnglishmajors.
Methodology
Aquantitativeandqualitativeapproachwasusedinthisstudy.Atotalof50samplesofwrittenEnglishproducedbyChineseEnglishmajorswerecollectedfromtwouniversitiesinChina.Thesampleswereanalyzedbasedonsevendimensionsofwrittenlanguageproficiency:vocabularyuse,grammar,syntax,cohesion,coherence,genre,andstyle.Theanalysiswasconductedusingacombinationofquantitativemeasurementtoolsandqualitativedataanalysis.
Results
TheresultsshowedthatChineseEnglishmajorsdemonstratedahighlevelofproficiencyinvocabularyuse,grammar,andsyntax.However,theirwritingoftenlackedcohesionandcoherence.Specifically,theuseofc
