ContentValidityResearchontheEnglishMajorCET-4ReadingComprehensionTest(2007-2013)
Introduction:
TheEnglishMajorCollegeEnglishTestBand4(CET-4)isawidelytakenexaminationinChina,whichevaluatestheEnglishlanguageproficiencyofstudentsmajoringinEnglish.OneoftheessentialcomponentsoftheCET-4isthereadingcomprehensionsection.ThispaperaimstoanalyzethecontentvalidityoftheCET-4readingcomprehensiontestfrom2007to2013.Contentvalidityreferstothedegreetowhichatestmeasureswhatitintendstomeasure(Messick,1980).UnderstandingthecontentvalidityoftheCET-4readingcomprehensiontestisofgreatsignificanceinimprovingitsreliabilityandvalidity.
Methodology:
ToinvestigatethecontentvalidityoftheCET-4readingcomprehensiontest,thisresearchemployedamixed-methodsapproach.Theanalysisfirstinvolvedaquantitativeevaluationofthetestquestionsandthenwassupplementedwithqualitativeanalysisoftheexammaterials.
QuantitativeAnalysis:
Thequantitativeanalysisinvolvedanexaminationofthetestquestionsfrom2007to2013.Thetestquestionswerereviewedandcategorizedintodifferentcontentareassuchasvocabulary,grammar,inference,mainidea,andreadingcomprehensionskills(suchassummarizing,outlining,anddrawingconclusions).Thepurposewastodeterminetheextenttowhichthetestcoveredthesedifferentcontentareas.
Results:
ThequantitativeanalysisrevealedthattheCET-4readingcomprehensiontestfrom2007to2013wasprimarilyfocusedontestingreadingcomprehensionskills.Approximately60%ofthequestionsweredesignedtoassessthestudents'abilitytounderstandandinterpretthemainidea,findsupportingdetails,makeinferences,andidentifyimplicitmeaning.Approximately20%ofthequestionscenteredaroundvocabularyandgrammar,whiletheremaining20%assessedotherreadingcomprehensionskills.
QualitativeAnalysis:
Thequalitativeanalysisinvolvedadeeperexaminationoftheexammaterials.Thereadingpassageswereanalyzedbasedontheircontent,difficultylevel,andsuitabilityforthetargetpopulation.TheanalysisaimedtoevaluatewhetherthereadingmaterialsadequatelyrepresentedtheEnglishMajorcurriculum
