Smalltalkispleasantconversationaboutcommoninterests.
WhyissmalltalkdifficultforsomeEnglishlearners?
Firstofall,makingsmalltalkisnotdifficultonlyforEnglishlearners,butalsoformanynativespeakersofEnglish.However,smalltalkcanbeespeciallydifficultforsomelearnersbecausemakingsmalltalkmeanstalkingaboutalmostanything-andthatmeanshavingawidevocabularythatcancovermosttopics.MostEnglishlearnershaveexcellentvocabularyinspecificareas,butmayhavedifficultiesdiscussingtopicstheyareunfamiliarwithbecauseofalackofappropriatevocabulary.
Thislackofvocabularyleadstosomestudents'blocking'.Theyslowdownorstopspeakingcompletelybecauseofalackofself-confidence.

Nowthatweunderstandtheproblem,thenextstepistoimprovethesituation.Herearesometipstoimprovesmalltalkskills.Ofcourse,makingeffectivesmalltalkmeanslotsofpractice,butkeepingthesetipsinmindshouldimproveoverallconversationalskills.

SpendtimeontheInternet,readingmagazines,orwatchingTVspecialsaboutthetypeofpeopleyouaregoingtomeet.Forexample:Ifyouaretakingaclasswithstudentsfromothercountries,taketimeafterthefirstfewdaysofclasstodosomeresearch.Theywillappreciateyourinterestandyourconversationswillbemuchmoreinteresting.
•	Stayawayfromreligion/strongpoliticalbeliefs
Whileyoumaybelieveinsomethingverystrongly,beginningconversationsandmakingsmalltalkaboutyourownpersonalconvictionsmayabruptlyendtheconversation.Keepitlight,don'ttrytoconvincetheotherpersonthatyouhavethe'correct'informationaboutahigherbeing,politicalsystemorotherbeliefsystem.
