GeographicIsolationofSpecies
BiologistErnstMayrdefinedaspeciesas“anactuallyorpotentiallyinterbreedingpopulationthatdoesnotinterbreedwithothersuchpopulationswhenthereisopportunitytodoso.”Akeyeventintheoriginofmanyspeciesistheseparationofapopulationwithitsgenepool(allofthegenesinapopulationatanyonetime)fromotherpopulationsofthesamespecies,therebypreventingpopulationinterbreedingWithitsgenepoolisolated,aseparatepopulationcanfollowitsownevolutionarycourse.Intheformationofmanyspecies,theinitialisolationofapopulationseemstohavebeenageographicbarrierThismodeofevolvingnewspeciesiscalledallopatricspeciation.
Manyfactorscanisolateapopulationgeographically.Amountainrangemayemergeandgraduallysplitapopulationoforganismsthatcaninhabitonlylowlandlakes,certainfishpopulationsmightbecomeisolatedinthisway.Similarity,acreepingglaciermaygraduallydivideapopulation,oralandbridgesuchastheIsthmusofPanamamayformandseparatethemarinelifeintheoceanwatersoneitherside.
Howformidablemustageographicbarrierbetokeeppopulationsapart?Itdependsontheabilityoftheorganismstomoveacrossbarriers.Birdsandcoyotescaneasilycrossmountainsandrivers.Thepassageofwind-blowntreepollenisalsonothinderedbysuchbarriers,andtheseedsofmanyplantsmaybeearnedbackandforthonanimalsIncontrast,smallrodentsmayfindadeepcanyonorawideriveraneffectivebarrier.Forexample,theGrandCanyon,inthesouthwesternUnitedSlates,separatetherangeofthewhile-tailedantelopesquirrelfromthatofthecloselyrelatedHarris’antelopesquirrel.Smaller,withashortertailthatiswhiteunderneath,thewhite-tailedantelopesquirrelinhabitsdesertsnorthofthecanyonandwestoftheColoradoRiverinsouthernCaliforniaHams'antelopesquirrelhasamorelimitedrangeindesertssouthoftheGrandCanyon.
Geographicisolationcreatesopportunitiesfornewspeciestodevelop,butitdoesnotnecessarilyleadtonewspeciesbecausespeciationoccursonlywhenthegenepoolundergoesenoughchangestoestablishreproductivebarriersbetweentheisolatedpopulationanditsparentpopulation.Thelikelihoodofallopatricspeciationincrease
