Auctionswereanotherpopularformofoccasionaltrade.Becauseofthecompetition,retailmerchantsopposedtheseaswellasthefairs.Although
governmentalattemptstoeradicatefairsandauctionswerelessthansuccessful,theordinarycourseofeconomicdevelopmentwasonthemerchants'side,asincreasingbusinessspecializationbecametheorderoftheday.Exportmerchantsbecamedifferentiatedfromtheirimportingcounterparts,andspecialtyshopsbegantoappearinadditiontogeneralstoressellingavarietyofgoods.
OneofthereasonsPhiladelphia'smerchantsgenerallyprosperedwasbecausethe
surroundingareawasundergoingtremendouseconomicanddemographicgrowth.
