ThearticlepresentsresultsobtainedusingasimpledynamictestingprocedurefrequentlyusedinSwitzerlandforhighwaybridges.Typicalresultsareshownandtendenciesobservedinthedynamicbehaviorofhighwaybridgesarepresented.Foradeterioratedpavement,thedynamicimpactofheavyvehiclesisshowntobelargeratlowertruckspeeds.Somecorrelationisshownbetweenthedynamicpropertiesofthebridgeanditsstiffness,asmeasuredinastaticloadtest.
1Introduction
DynamicloadtestingisanimportantpartoftheacceptanceprocessfornewbridgesinSwitzerland.Asacomplementtostaticloadtests,dynamictestsyieldusefulinformationabouttheactualbehaviorofthebridgeundertraffic.Thisinformationisusuallydifficulttoobtainanalytically,becauseofthecomplexityoftheactualstructure.Theeffectofpavementdeteriorationonthedynamicresponseofthebridgeisaparticularimportanceforthemanagementofthestructure.Thisinformationcanbeeasilyandrealisticallyobtainedfromadynamictest,andthereafterusedbythehighwayauthoritiestoorganizethepavementmaintenance.
DrawingonthelargenumberoftestsperformedbyIBAPoverthepasttwentyyears,thepaperdescribesthegeneraldynamiccharacteristicsofhighwaybridges.Somecorrelationisshownbetweenthestiffnessobtainedinastaticloadtestandthemeasuredeigenfrequencies.Theinfluenceofthespeedofavehiclecrossingthebridgeisdiscussed.Inparticular,theeffectofanartificialdamageinthepavementonthedynamicbehaviorispresented.
