Intoday'sworld,scienceandtechnologyhavebecometwoofthemostimportantdriversofnationaldevelopmentandprogress.Asahighlydevelopedandadvancedcountry,Australiaplacesgreatemphasisonresearchinscienceandtechnology.Thecountryhasnumerousinstitutionsthatengageinvarioustypesofresearchrangingfromhealthandmedicalresearch,environmentalresearch,energyresearch,toinnovationandtechnologyresearch.ThispaperexaminesAustralia'snationalresponsibilitywithregardstotechnologyresearch.
Nationalresponsibilityfortechnologyresearch
InAustralia,technologyresearchisanationalresponsibilityasitplaysacrucialroleinthecountry'sfuturegrowth,prosperityandeconomicsustainability.Asaresult,theAustralianGovernmenthasputmeasuresinplacetofosteraconduciveenvironmentfortechnologyresearch.OnesuchmeasureisthroughfundinginstitutionsthatcarryoutresearchsuchastheCommonwealthScientificandIndustrialResearchOrganisation(CSIRO),AustralianResearchCouncil(ARC),andtheNationalHealthandMedicalResearchCouncil(NHMRC).
TheAustralianGovernmenthasalsoestablishedpoliciesaimedatpromotingtechnologyresearch.OnesuchpolicyistheNationalInnovationandScienceAgenda(NISA)whichwaslaunchedbythegovernmentinDecember2015.Theinitiativeaimedatpromotingscience,innovationandentrepreneurshipthroughincentivessuchastaxbreaksandfundingsupportforresearchinstitutions,venturecapitalfunds,andstartups.TheNISAalsosupportededucationandtrainingofresearchersandtechnologists,providingthemwiththenecessaryskillsandknowledgetoengageincutting-edgeresearch.
AnotherpolicyinstitutedbytheAustraliangovernmenttowardssupportingtechnologyresearchistheAustralianResearchInfrastructureStrategy(ARIS)whichwaslaunchedin2016.Theprogramaimstoprovideresearcherswithworld-classinfrastructure,equipment,andfacilitiestocarryouttheirworkeffectively.TheARISisaten-yearplanthatallocatesfundingtowardstheestablishmentofnewresearchfacilitiesandupgradingofexistingones.
