Introduction
Nowadays,electricityhasbecomeanessentialelementofmodernsocietyduetoitswideuseinvariousfields.Asthedemandforelectricityincreases,ithasbecomenecessarytomaintainthequalityandstabilityofthepowergridtoensurecontinuityandreliabilityofpowersupply.Oneofthechallengesinmaintainingthequalityofpowersupplyistheoccurrenceofvoltagefluctuationsinthepowergrid.Toaddressthischallenge,astaticsynchronouscompensator(STATCOM)hasbeendevelopedandusedforreactivepowercompensationandvoltagestabilizationinthepowergrid.Thispaperdiscussesthetransientresponseanalysisofa35kV±200MVASTATCOManditsimportanceinmaintainingpowergridstability.
Background
ASTATCOMisastaticsynchronousdevicethatisusedtocontrolandregulatevoltageinthepowergrid.Thedeviceconsistsofavoltagesourceinverter(VSI),DCcapacitors,andacontrolsystem.TheVSIconvertstheDCvoltagefromtheDCcapacitorstoACvoltage,whichisinjectedintothepowergrid.ThecontrolsystemmonitorsthevoltageandcurrentinthepowergridandcontrolstheoutputoftheVSItoadjustthereactivepowerandvoltagetomaintaingridstability.
