Introduction
Motivationplaysasignificantroleinthelearningprocessofanyindividual.Itisaprocessthatdrivesapersontoinitiate,sustain,andguidetheirbehaviortowardsachievingdesiredgoals.Motivationhasbeenfoundtobeakeyfactorinacademicsuccess,andthisisparticularlytrueforgraduatestudents.Assuch,thispaperaimstoexplorethefactorsthatmotivategraduatestudentstolearnEnglish.
LiteratureReview
Theimportanceofmotivationinlanguagelearningcannotbeoverstated.Researchhasshownthatmotivationisacriticalfactorthatinfluencesthesuccessoflanguagelearners(DörnyeiandUshioda,2011;Egbertetal.,2014).Graduatestudents,inparticular,needtohavehighlevelsofmotivationastheyfaceuniquechallengessuchasthedemandsofacademicwork,research,andteaching.
InexaminingthemotivationforEnglishlanguagelearning,themostcommonlycitedtheoreticalframeworkistheSelf-DeterminationTheory(SDT)(DeciandRyan,1985).SDTpositsthatlearnersengageinaparticularactivityiftheyaremotivatedbyintrinsicfactors,suchaspersonalinterestsandenjoyment,orextrinsicfactors,suchasrewardsorexternalpressures.Otherresearchershaveidentifiedadditionalcomponentsofmotivationsuchasattitudestowardsthetargetlanguage,thelevelofexposuretothelanguage,andtheimportanceoflanguageproficiencyforacademic,social,andcareergoals(Gardner,1985;Noelsetal.,1999;MacIntyreetal.,2002).
Methodology
ThisstudyexaminedthefactorsthatmotivatedgraduatestudentstolearnEnglish.Atotalof50graduatestudentsweresurveyedusinganonlinequestionnaire.Thequestionnaireconsistedofclosedandopen-endedquestionsthatexploredthefollowingfactors:intrinsicmotivation,extrinsicmotivation,attitudetowardsEnglish,importanceoflanguageproficiencyforacademic,social,andcareergoals,andexposuretothelanguage.
Results
TheresultsofthestudyshowedthatthemostimportantfactormotivatinggraduatestudentstolearnEnglishwasintrinsicmotivation.70%oftherespondentsreportedthattheyweremotivatedtolearnEnglishbecausetheyfounditinterestingandenjoyable.Thesecondmostimportantfactorwasextrinsicmotivation,with50%oftherespondentsindicatingthat
