Introduction
Nounwaste,thephenomenonofunnecessaryorredundantuseofnouns,isacommonprobleminacademicandprofessionalwriting.Theissueofnounwastehasbeentheobjectofstudyforresearchersinappliedlinguistics,withtheaimofidentifyingitscausesandproposingsolutions.ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatethephenomenonofnounwasteinacademicwritingbyChineseEnglishmajorswhoarepursuingtheirmaster'sdegreeinEnglish.
Background
Theissueofnounwastehasbeenthesubjectofnumerousstudiesinappliedlinguistics.Studieshavebeenconductedtoanalyzethetypesofnounwaste,itsfrequency,anditscauses.InEnglish,nounwasteischaracterizedbytheunnecessaryorredundantuseofnouns.Researchershaveidentifiedseveraltypesofnounwaste,suchasgratuitousnominalization,misplacedspecification,andrepetition.Studieshavealsofoundthatnounwasteoccursinvariousacademicfields,includingscience,engineering,andhumanities.
Methodology
Theparticipantsinthisstudywere50ChineseEnglishmajorswhowerepursuingtheirmaster'sdegreeinEnglish.Thedatawerecollectedfromasampleofacademicessayswrittenbytheseparticipants,coveringarangeofdisciplinesinthehumanities,socialsciences,andnaturalsciences.Thecollecteddatawereanalyzedusingaqualitativeapproach,inwhichthetypesandfrequencyofnounwastewerenoted,andthecausesofnounwastewereidentified.
Results
Theresultsofthestudyshowedthattheparticipantstendedtousenounwasteintheiracademicwriting.Themostcommontypeofnounwastewasgratuitousnominalization,whichreferstotheuseofanounformofaverbwhentheverbwouldbemoreappropriate.Anothercommontypeofnounwastewasmisplacedspecification,inwhichunnecessaryspecificationswereaddedtonouns,causingthetexttobecomecumbersome.Repetitionwasathirdtypeofnounwastefoundintheparticipants'writing.
Thecausesofnounwastewereidentifiedasalackofclarityinthinking,alackofknowledgeofthesubject,andalackofconfidenceintheabilitytoexpressideasinwriting.Thesecauseswereattributedtofactorssuchasinadequatepreparationforacademicwriting,limitedaccesstoacademicresourcesinEnglish,andlowlevelsofEnglishproficiency.
