InthecontextofChinesehighereducation,itisquitecommonforgraduatestudentstoattendEnglishclassestoimprovetheirlanguageskills.However,ithasbeenobservedthatmanyofthesestudentsexhibitaphenomenonknownas‘classroomsilence’.Classroomsilencereferstothereluctanceorinabilityofstudentstoparticipateinclassdiscussionsdespitebeingabletodoso.Thisphenomenonhasbeenstudiedextensivelyovertheyears,andmanycauseshavebeenidentified.ThepurposeofthispaperistoprovideanoverviewoftheclassroomsilencephenomenonamonggraduatestudentsinpublicEnglishclasses.
CausesofClassroomSilence
LackofConfidence
Oneoftheprimaryreasonswhystudentsexhibitclassroomsilenceisalackofconfidenceintheirlanguageskills.Graduatestudentsareoftenexpectedtohaveahighleveloflanguageproficiency,butthisisnotalwaysthecase.Studentsmayfeelinhibitedbytheirlackoffluencyortheirpronunciation,whichcanpreventthemfromparticipatingindiscussions.Additionally,theymaybeafraidofmakingmistakesandbeingjudgedbytheirpeers,whichcanimpacttheirself-esteemandconfidencelevels.
ShynessandSocialAnxiety
Anotherfactorthatcontributestoclassroomsilenceisshynessandsocialanxiety.Graduatestudentsmayfeeluncomfortablespeakinginfrontofalargegroupofindividuals,especiallyiftheyarenotfamiliarwiththem.Theymayfearnegativeevaluationorcriticismfromboththeteacherandtheotherstudentsintheclass.Thiscanleadtoatendencytowithdrawfromparticipationinclassdiscussions.
LearningStyle
Athirdfactorthatmaycontributetoclassroomsilenceisthestudent'slearningstyle.Somestudentslearnbestthroughindependentstudy,whileothersprefergroupdiscussionsorparticipatorylearning.ThosewhopreferindependentstudymaynotfeelcomfortablewiththeinteractivelearningenvironmentthatisoftentakesplaceinEnglishclasses.Asaresult,theymaybereluctanttoparticipateorengagewiththematerialpresentedinclass.
